Iran has expressed formal appreciation to Russia and China following their use of veto power at the United Nations Security Council to block a vote that would have placed multilateral pressure on Tehran, according to reports citing Al Jazeera’s live coverage.
The development confirms what diplomatic observers had anticipated that the Russia-China axis within the Security Council’s permanent five would act as a protective shield for Iran at a moment of peak US pressure on the Islamic Republic.
The vetoed resolution had sought to address tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately one-fifth of global oil supply flows daily. Its failure marks a significant diplomatic victory for Tehran and a setback for Washington’s efforts to build international consensus against Iran.
Iran’s expression of appreciation is more than a diplomatic courtesy. It is a public acknowledgement of an emerging trilateral alignment Tehran, Moscow, and Beijing that is increasingly operating as a coherent bloc in opposition to Western-led initiatives at the UN. The move comes hours after China’s UN delegate explicitly cited US rhetoric including language characterised as threatening to “annihilate a civilization” as justification for opposing the resolution. Pope Leo has separately condemned American threats against the Iranian population as “unacceptable.”
Together, these developments paint a picture of a United States increasingly isolated on the world stage over its Iran policy, with traditional multilateral mechanisms now firmly closed off as a tool of pressure.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most volatile flashpoints in global geopolitics. With the Security Council now effectively deadlocked, the risk of unilateral action and its consequences for global energy markets rises accordingly.
