IRAN

Iran says it is not intimidated by President Trump’s threats.

Trump says both sides want a deal. Iran says they are not intimidated. Both things can be true and that is exactly what makes this moment so delicate.

What this means: Iran is speaking to two audiences simultaneously. To its own population battered by weeks of strikes, economic pressure, and leadership losses it is projecting strength and defiance. To Washington which is claiming productive talks, it is signalling that any deal will be made from a position of dignity, not surrender.

What this means for the talks: A country that negotiates while publicly declaring it is not intimidated is a country that needs the deal to not look like defeat. That is not an obstacle to a deal. It is actually a map of what the deal needs to look like, Iran needs language, framing, and terms that allow it to tell its people it stood firm and won concessions. Trump needs to be able to say Iran capitulated.

Both things cannot both be publicly true. Someone will have to accept a narrative that is less than the full story.

That is called diplomacy.
