In one sentence, the entire post-World War II security architecture of the Western world is in question.
NATO has been the cornerstone of Western collective defence for 75 years. It is the alliance that rebuilt Europe after its most destructive century, that contained Soviet expansion, that responded to September 11th as an attack on all members, and that has underwritten the security assumptions of every Western government since 1949.
Trump is thinking about walking away from all of it. Today. While the US is at war with Iran. While China circles Taiwan. While Russia coaches Iran on how to kill American soldiers.
What this means: Every NATO member from the Baltic states facing Russian pressure to Germany hosting American nuclear weapons to Turkey sitting at the alliance’s southern flank woke up today inside an alliance. They may go to sleep uncertain whether that alliance exists tomorrow morning in any meaningful sense.
What this means globally: America’s adversaries have spent decades trying to fracture NATO from the outside. Trump is considering doing it from the inside on the most destabilising day in modern geopolitical history.
The Director of the National Counterterrorism Center resigned this morning saying this war had no justification. Oil is at $100. Tel Aviv has been struck. Dubai’s airport is shut. Taiwan is being circled. And now NATO itself is on the table.
