The five-day pause applies to US strikes on Iranian power plants. It does not apply to Israel. It does not apply to Iran. The two countries at the centre of this war have just confirmed they did not get the memo or they got it and rejected it.
What this means: Trump’s announcement this morning was always more fragile than the markets priced in. Oil fell on hopes of resolution. But resolution requires both parties to stop and both parties have now said they will not. The pause is American. The war is not.
What this means globally: There are now three separate realities operating simultaneously. Washington says productive talks are underway. Tehran says no talks exist. And Israeli and Iranian officials say the shooting continues regardless. The world is trying to navigate all three at once and markets, governments, and civilians in the region are caught between them.
The five-day clock is running. The guns are still firing. And nobody agrees on what is actually happening.
